This is such an amazing idea, I absolutely LOVE it! I live far from LA in rural WI, but I can see how an idea like this could really improve green space just about anywhere. I am also a big fan of the fact that proceeds go to a(nother) good cause! Awesome!

This press release could not be farther from the truth. In reality, more than two-thirds of this beautiful learning space will be demolished for parking spaces, which encourage automobile use and further pollute the environment, all trees will be uprooted, trees that absorb runoff and shade gardeners, the ground will be leveled, community members will effectively be expelled, and the social, environmental, and literal fruits of 13 years of work will instantly be undone. These plans are being driven by President Gould.
The Campus Road Community Garden already serves as a learning center, serves the sustainability mission of CUNY, andserves as a community bridge. The college just doesn't want contested space, wants to turn the entire campus into a parking lot, and HATES the surrounding community.

Its funny that Carpinteria would embrace a community garden project when their city planning and zoning commision will not allow the local greenhouse industry to flourish. There are many greenhouses that need to be updated and built, but there are not any permits given to do so. The planning dept would rather see condos built there than greenhouse, which are producing local vegetables. Ironic dont you think?

This is truly wonderful news! Having lived most of my life in the OC area--surrounded by lima bean fields and orange groves as a kid--and witnessing suburban sprawl engulf the open spaces, this news is almost too good to be true. I never thought I'd live to see the day when farms would once again start replacing concrete and steel (a military base no less!). Hope this starts a new trend. Next up: local co-op farms in place of shopping malls!
